Religious heritage, humanistic principles, geopolitical interests, and continuous media attention all contribute to our ongoing focus on the struggle for a just solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Yet after a century of fruitless diplomatic efforts, inconclusive wars, and diverse proposed solutions, peace is more elusive than ever. In an effort to gauge critically and objectively the history of this conflict, the course examines the issues, events, and personalities that have shaped dynamics between Jews and Palestinians from the advent of 19th-century nationalism to the present day. Not only is the conflict intertwined with security in the Middle East, but it encompasses issues of moral symbolism, religious and ethnic identity, political aspirations and frustrations, the origins and consequences of wars, and international political interplay.
