According to Professor Newman, another rampage school shooting in this country is inevitable. Most likely it will occur in a tightly-knit suburban or rural community, as rampage shootings almost never happen in urban areas. Is there something about these idyllic-seeming places and their social fabric that can lead a potential shooter to act? Or is there something about these places that make the warning signs hard to read? If the past is indicative of the future, witnesses and observers will say a shooter “just snapped,” and that nobody saw it coming. Yet Newman and a team of researchers have found that the warning signs are usually everywhere. Many shooters have mental health issues, like depression, that go unaddressed, and the actual violent act is often forecasted via student gossip and other means. In this lecture, Newman explores the phenomenon of rampage shootings and how families, schools, and communities can prevent another tragedy.
