The Nature of Genius: From Leonardo da Vinci to Beethoven
Craig Wright - Yale University

What is genius? Can we all become geniuses if we just practice diligently for 10,000 hours over a 10 year period, as some recent "self-help" books suggest? This class will test our definition by evaluating luminaries past and present, including Charles Darwin, Michael Phelps, Michael Jackson, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffet, and even Secretariat!

Abraham Lincoln: Separating Fact from Fiction
Louis Masur - Rutgers University

Abraham Lincoln is considered our greatest President and one of the most controversial. People have debated various aspects of his personality and politics. Was he depressed? Why did he tell so many stories? Was he truly opposed to slavery? Did he free the slaves? Did the Union prevail because of his leadership or despite him? Louis Masur will take a close look at Lincoln, assessing his political style and temperament, and focusing on the question of Lincoln and slavery. In the end, we will hope to uncover the man and not the myth.

Five Paintings Every Art Lover Should See
Tina Rivers - Columbia University

Any attempt to identify the "best" works of art in the Western canon inevitably depends upon the criteria being used. While it may be interesting to know which are the most expensive, the most famous or the most historically significant works, Tina Rivers will look at five exemplary works (from different times, places and genres) that provide insight into the possibilities of painting - that is, into the ways in which the medium of painting has been used meaningfully, from its inception up until the present day.
