Congress 2021 and Beyond: What Happens Now?
Wendy Schiller is the Chair of the Political Science Department at Brown University. She is an expert in the field of the U.S. Congress and political representation, and the recipient of a National Science Foundation grant to study party conflict and factionalism in the U.S. Senate. Professor Schiller has been a guest scholar at the Brookings Institution and a six-time recipient of the Undergraduate Teaching and Research Award at Brown.
Overview
This talk will address the new dynamics of the American Congress in 2021. What will Democratic control look like? How successful will the slim Democratic majority be on issues like immigration, minimum wage and economy. Will the 50-50 Senate help or hurt President Biden’s agenda? How will the far-right extreme wing of the Republican Party limit bipartisanship? Will a portion of the Republican Party in Congress decide to split off and run as Independents in 2022? We will also discuss the potential impact of the looming shadow of former President Trump on the Republican Party nationally.
